Google >> Linux-kjernen

Hobby-boy
Yes, I am a hobby-boy. Time-spender extraordinaire :p
Well, I recently had a rebound with a lost love of mine: shooting! :)
Well, airgun shooting that is... So I bought myself a summer-present, a brand-new Umarex Beretta M-92 FS XX-Treme, airgun.
I'm actually quite gitty about this "boy-toy", I've been dreaming of owning one of these for a looong time.
A couple of hardwood-boards, a pellet collector-plate and I'm set for a ShootOut!

Spotify for Linux! :D
I barely remember signing up for a "Spotify-for-Linux" campaign on the Spotify-forums a while ago (you can find the forums here). But now, a few months later, the Spotify-crew apparently used their spare time since the campaign launched to engineer a native linux-client :) way to go guy's!
At the beginning of this week, the Spotify RSS-feed announced the tech-preview of the Spotify-for-Linux-client. Being the technophiliac that I am, I just couldn't resist testing it, even though I had promised myself I wouldn't test any beta-software on my only surviving laptop from the last decade (Asus Eee 900).
After crashing the client on the command-line before even logging in or anything, I got really frustrated. It felt like an eternity ago I signed that petition for a linux-client, so I didn't stop now.
So, I figured I'd report the problem in their forums. I posted under the title "Spotify for Linux - UNE 10.04.1 - Illegal instruction". The problem was acknowledged a day later, and a few days after that (today) they released an updated package that didn't throw an exception because of instruction-sets (low-level CPU functions).
At this very moment, I am listening to my playlists in the native linux-client :D and I'm VERY pleased! INDEED! ;D
You can find out more at this address:
http://www.spotify.com/en/download/previews/
P.S.you have to own a paid premium-account to use the linux-client for now, they're having issues on how to display ads in a stable manner (read: without being "hackable" :P). So, until they solve the ad-problems, only premium-users can use the client.
Additional, July 17th 03:39 GMT+1:
After using the preview-client for a day or two, I'm very pleased with the sound quality and player operation, especially considering it's an alpha/beta-stage project.
Sure, there are hickups in the code as with many other linux-based projects, but overall it's very operational, functional, and mostly stable. Using unimplemented-features shoots the cpu-load through the roof (60-80%), but that's to be expected, infancy-bugs will be debugged eventually.

Go-go Andy, GO! ;D
"Andy" has definitely had an international impact on the mobile device market the past twelve months. Google cites statistics gathered worldwide, saying they're activating around 160.000 handsets each day - with a little 'math-magic' this equates to 58 million sold Android handset devices. To compare, 4 months ago these numbers were 20.000 handsets a day - 22 million a year.
All of this is only statistics, however, keep in mind that the Android mobile platform ranked on the top-5 smartphone sales list in only a couple of years - not a bad feat at all considering Microsoft and RIM has dominated this market for quite a few years already, not to mention the arrival of Apple's (dreaded?) iPhone.
Cudos to Google and the Google Teams for bringing us an open-source based solution that rubs shoulders with the biggest, baddest boys in the biz'.
I know I'm more than satisfied with my HTC Desire Android-phone :P

Xbox 360 S - 250GB

A few words...
Ok, to start off, I've always said people obsess about desirable objects of irrelevance.
This is exactly what I think of the fuss about iPad, iPod, iPhone, and the like.
I used to be an Apple fanboy, using Macintosh machines and software for DTP/PR illustration and artwork purposes. But these days, what's the point?
"Think different"?
Well, Apple-machines run on the same hardware as PCs running Microsoft Windows these days. Suffice to say Apple has definitely shifted the last decade, and not for the better if you ask me.
iPhone? - I actually love my HTC Desire Google Android smartphone very much thank you.
iPod? - My HTC Desire runs Spotify and has my entire favorites collection stored offline on the SD-card.
iPad? - Nooot really my bag. I think I'll be waiting a little while for some ubuntu pre-installed pc-pad, which does not restrict my computing in any way, and is way cheaper per high-spec component compared to Apple-products.
There's a major difference between the phrases "need to have" and "just works". I prefer the second, but then again maybe I have a little more than average understanding of technology, to better cope with the situation should the software not function as advertised. That's the major problem with OSS software, it does not come with a guarantee of operation, you either have to make it work yourself, or pay for the support to get it working. Mind you, the linux-support available is extraordinarily useful and easy compared to big proprietary ISVs.
I've given up telling people about these facts. The only people that listen to such advice about computer equipment and/or software choices, are people that eventually prefer Linux over Mac OS X and Windows as their everyday OS.
Sure, I can understand that in Scandinavia, we have a rather sore relationship with the word "free". The past has not proven the word to have any positive meaning in any areas, This was also why the OSS community split from the FSF in the 90s. The wrong words for the right thing if you ask me.
I think it's awesome that I can download software-packages from the Internet via University and/or ISP mirror-servers, and make a computer-device work out-of-the-box on an operating system I got the same way :) way to go Torvalds, FSF and the OSS communities!
I SALUTE YOU! ;D

Digital video/audio formats?
I recently acquired myself a hybrid Hi-Fi HD surround receiver to try and organize all my A/V-cables, and also to enhance my listening experience both with music and film.
Honestly, I didn't actually expect to notice any difference between Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound, and the new formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD.
But I certainly did.
Dolby Digital (or "DD") was the first fully digitized stream-standard for movie-surround. This means that the audio-track on the DVD/DVR/BD medium is digitally recorded and encoded (analogue soundwaves, converted into computer-data, further reducing distortion and noise).
- DD uses the AC3 (Audio Codec 3) codec to compress 5.1 surround channels of sound at varying sample-rates of up to 48KHz.
- DD formats are usually noted as "DD 2.0" or "DD 5.1" on specs (covers,etc.).
Dolby TrueHD (or "DTHD") is the first Dolby-implementation of a high-definition sound codec. Dolby based the DTHD codec on Meridian Lossless Packaging technology, making it a lossless format (meaning, it doesn't compress the audio-data, but stores it fullrange). Because of this, DTHD can handle up to 24Bit 96KHz audio, at an 18MBit/s transfer-rate, over 14 channels. A true High-Definition multi-channel system.
In conclusion, I think HD formats are for enthusiasts. If you aren't an audiophile (like me), chances are you won't even notice any differences. Unless you have a reasonably up-2-date Hi-Fi system with HDMI inputs or at least digital coax/optical inputs.
To put it in other words:
If Dolby Digital "is like going to the cinema"
Dolby TrueHD "IS the cinema"

It's about F-ing time...
2008 and 2009 saw increasing usage of alternative web browsers, which is a good thing in my opinion. Ever since I switched to only using browsers based on open standards, I haven't experienced any significant issues while doing my daily surf.
Also, ever since my major switch to standards based operating systems (BSD, Linux, etc.) I have not had ANY issues with regards to viruses and/or spyware. AND I have not done a single "FARI"-session (Format-And-Re-Install, anyone with advanced Microsoft-familiarity must have done this a couple of dozen times, or more... as I have).
With the recent critisizm against the security in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, and a German government agency warning against the use of Internet Explorer, Mozilla's German department has reported huge increases in downloads from IE users in Germany.
Allthough Germany has always had small IE-footprints, the last days show that this trend does not seem to be changing any time soon. Mozilla reported an average browser-download of 70.000 unique downloads before the government warning issue, and a staggering 200.000 unique downloads after. Seeing this happening in a fellow European country gives me hope that it might just tip over the browser-userbase statistics worldwide sometime soon.

Social Desktops
With EasyPeasy for NetBooks and Google Chromium OS hitting the desktop-markets these days, does everyone actually know what a "Social Desktop" is?
You could read about it on wikipedia.org, but I thought I would do my readers a favour and explain it in really simple terms.
A desktop is just what you see on your computer-screen when you've logged in to your system.
A 'Social Desktop' is an interface on top of a desktop that integrates social web-services (like: facebook, myspace, twitter, last.fm, live rss-feeds, etc.) into one unified interface, so you won't have to open a browser with a dozen tabs open to log in to your favourite web-services.
It is also a technique to design GUIs, to make things more accessible and easy to use (much like ergonomics in work environments to ease physical strain).
P.S. - it is worth noting that neither Google nor EasyPeasy have released any fully working 'Social Desktop' environments yet, but they're in the making.

Whoah! :o
When it comes to our attention that a Microsoft component contains third party code, our aim is to be respectful of the terms under which that code is being shared. As a result, we will be making the source code as well as binaries for this tool available next week under the terms of the General Public License v2 ... and are also taking measures to apply what we have learned from this experience for future code reviews we perform.

Facebook på PS3
Oppdatering 27. november:
